Review by Ronny

Series Name: Blonde Identity, # 2
The Blonde Who Came in From the Cold is a fabulous spy romcom and perfect for anyone looking to escape the blues this winter.
Favourite Quote:
It wasn’t the first time Alexandra Sterling had woken up tied to a chair in the dark, but it was the first time she couldn’t remember exactly how she got there.
Book Synopsis:
Ten years ago, they joined the CIA.
Six years ago, he left the game.
Five years ago, they fell in love.
One year ago, she ran out into the cold with absolutely no intention of ever coming back.
And two minutes ago, they woke up, bloody and bruised and handcuffed together in the dark.
They don’t know where they are. They don’t know how they got there. And they have absolutely no idea who is after them or what this nameless, faceless villain wants.
The only thing that’s clear is that, after ten years of covers and chemistry, secrets and lies, these two rival spies have been sucked into their greatest mission yet, and now they’re going to have to team up to stay alive. (If they don’t kill each other first.)
Review:
I absolutely adored, and I mean adored, The Blonde Identity (the first book in this series). It was one of those books that came into my life when I needed a pick-me-up, and funny enough, this book came into my life when I needed it too. Ally Carter is a master at crafting fun, flirty romcoms that deliver an unforgettable reading experience. It’s hard to write a true romcom, and then when you also throw in an action spy element, it makes it even more complicated. But Ally seems to have figured out the right formula for creating a story that just delivers on every level.
When I started this book, I was a bit nervous. I loved the first book so much, and I was afraid this one wouldn’t live up to the expectations I had for it. There is also that fear that the second book in a series will feel repetitive and not as fresh. But I am happy to report that this book is just as good as its predecessor. It has all the qualities that I loved from the first book, but with a new, exciting, fast-paced story. In this book, we get to spend time with Alex (Zoe’s twin sister), who was a big mystery in the first book. Alex is a spy, and her last mission ended up dragging Zoe into the “spy” world. First, I should say that this is one of those rare romance series you really need to read in the order they come out, so you can fully understand what is going on. The events in the first book are connected to what is happening in this book.
The overall story is fun, fast, and so easy to sink into. It really is a quick read and doesn’t require anything from you. It’s one of those books you can just sit back and enjoy the ride. 2025 was the year of second-chance romances, and this book is no exception to that trend. I’m not the biggest fan of second-chance romances, but I found myself enjoying this one. I think it was because it didn’t feel like a traditional second-chance contemporary romance. The spy elements in this book and this cat-and-mouse game Alex and King find themselves in, inject enough uniqueness into that trope that I found myself not hating it as much as I usually do. I loved the spy elements in this book. It gives off those fun comedy-action-spy-movie vibes, which is rather hard to pull off in written form. The spy world that Ally created was well thought out and really interesting. She does a great job of making sure her readers have all the information they need to understand what is going on without info-dumping.
Ally uses time slips very cleverly in this book. They have this dual purpose in this story. The first is to show the progress of Alex and King’s relationship and its eventual downfall, and the second is to feed readers the information they need to understand that larger spy vs. mysterious bad-guy story. I thought the time slipping was incredibly well done. Even though we were going back and forth in time, the flow of the story never felt jarring. Everything unfolded perfectly.
Alex and King are fabulous MCs, and my god, their romance was delicious. Their chemistry is bursting with sharp, fun, witty banter. There is something so wonderful about watching two very smart and capable characters interact with each other. They are constantly keeping each other on their toes. I am a sucker for a character that is left speechless, exasperated, or bemused by their love interest. It’s like catnip for my bookworm soul. There was just something about their chemistry that felt so right for me, and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. Everything just clicked with them. Ally’s books are closed-door romances, which means that there are no sex scenes in her books, which I kind of like. Don’t get me wrong, I love a spicy romance, but in this case, the closed-door romance works with the vibes that this story gives off. Now that isn’t to say there isn’t any heat in this book. The chemistry between Alex and King is smoking hot, and you can feel that slow-burn physical tension building between these two.
The Blonde Who Came In From The Cold is another knockout spy romance by the incredibly talented Ally Carter.
