Ellie K. Wilde is a Canadian writer of contemporary romance and romantic comedies that make you laugh, swoon… and maybe require a cold shower or two to recover. She enjoys writing stories with dirty-mouthed cinnamon roll heroes and the fiery women who bring them to their knees.

When she’s not daydreaming about her next book, you’ll find her devouring other romance novels, bingeing reality TV and snuggling with fur babies.

What’s the strangest thing you searched for on the internet for your novel?

Okay, I’m going to cheat here because as far as I remember, my search history was pretty tame for Only in Your Dreams. But in writing the second book of the series (Only Between Us, releasing July 8) I did my fair share of research as to the cleanliness of the water and likelihood of sharks at Los Angeles beaches. Had to find a way to let those characters safely enjoy their aquatic… activities.

What book (or author) made you fall in love with the romance genre?

I believe she’d be categorized as women’s fiction with strong romantic plot, but I grew up on anything and everything Sophie Kinsella. She’s got the best sense of humor, and a true ability to make you root for her characters and their love interests. I remember reading her books in my teens, hanging on every word when the love interest was on the page and wishing I could read about three hundred more pages of just them talking and flirting. I hadn’t yet been introduced to romance as a genre, so you can imagine how ecstatic I was to eventually realize that there were whole books with characters talking and flirting. It was a life-changing discovery!

What is your favourite trope? Why?

I love anything that gives a forbidden undertone to the budding relationship. Coworkers with a no-fraternization policy at work? Sign me up. Brother’s best friend? I’m there. Athletes playing on rival teams? Sold.

There’s something so juicy about it—the way the characters first struggle to keep their feelings in check, and then to keep anyone from finding out about them until it becomes all but impossible. It feels like being in on a secret with them.

It’s the morning after, and a lover is making your main character the perfect breakfast in bed. What is it?

According to chapter 37 of Only in Your Dreams, she gets coffee with lactose-free cinnamon creamer and her favourite blueberry waffles for breakfast in bed, while he gets to eat… her! Melody truly is the winner here.

What book are you reading currently?

I’ve held off on anything new in anticipation of Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros, which will surely become my entire personality for weeks (probably months) to come.
