Series Name: Bow Street Runners, # 3

She faced him, and they both froze as their gazes locked. Nick forgot the wall beneath his feet. It seemed as if they were poised in midair, in a blue wash of moonlight that made everything look unreal. Recognition shot through him like a bolt of lighting. Incredibly, he found himself staring into the features that had almost become more familiar to him than his own.

Charlotte.

“I’ve got you,” he repeated with a faint smile.

Worth Any Price is a swoonastic conclusion to the Bow Street Runners series.

Nick Gentry is reputed to be the most skillful lover in all England. Known for solving delicate situations, he is hired to seek out Miss Charlotte Howard. He believes his mission will be easily accomplished – but that was before he met the lady in question.
For instead of a willful female, he discovers one in desperate circumstances, hiding from a man who could destroy her very soul. So Nick shockingly offers her a very different kind of proposition – one he has never offered before.

He asks her to be his bride.

And he knows that this will be much more than a union in name only. For he senses what Charlotte does not yet know – that her appetite for sensuality matches his own. But what Nick learns surprises him. For while London’s most notorious lover might claim Charlotte’s body, he quickly discovers it will take much more than passion to win her love.

Lisa is one of my go-to comfort authors. She is a master at creating a story and characters that capture your attention and takes them on an unforgettable romantic journey. Worth Any Price is the third book in the Bow Street Runners series but can be read as a stand-alone. We met Nick in the previous book; he is Sophia’s (the main heroine from book two) brother. The last book’s ending had Nick being forced to decide whether he wanted to become a Bow Street Runner or be executed for his criminal past. Of course, he chooses to live and becomes quite a successful Runner. Worth Any Price is set a few years after the previous book and begins with Nick on the hunt to find Charlotte, who has fled her home because she doesn’t want to marry Lord Radnor.

This book is one of Lisa’s slower-paced stories. There isn’t a lot of action going on in this book. Worth Any Price is a relationship-driven story with the main focus being Charlotte and Nick’s growing relationship. The outside world and secondary characters only occupy a little space in the plot. The only real outside event that helps move the story along is Nick being forced to take his family title. He doesn’t want to become a Lord, and he and Charlotte must work together to be ready when he takes on this new role in society. I don’t always like plots that almost solely focus on a romantic relationship because if I don’t like one or both of the main characters, staying interested in the story can be a struggle. In this case, I like both Charlotte and Nick and enjoyed spending time with them. Charlotte is smart and witty and has no problem standing up to Nick when he is unreasonable. She is a delight to be around, and I loved watching her spread her wings and learn to live without this fear of Lord Radnor hanging over her head. Nick comes across as this aloof man who has no intentions of lowering those walls around his heart. But there is this more vulnerable side to Nick that shows itself every so often throughout the story. That side hooked me in and made me want to learn more about this mysterious man.

You know you are in for a spicy ride when the first chapter of this book focuses on Nick starting this journey of becoming a more skillful lover. There is this insta lust feel to the beginning of this story. Nick knew almost right away that there was no way he would hand Charlotte over to Lord Radnor. He was astonished that this mysterious woman could draw out these powerful feelings of possessiveness and intrigue. He was truly captivated by her. I love, love, love a story where the hero knocks off his feet and is blown away by his new feelings for the heroine. Nick has no idea why he is so attracted to Charlotte; all he knows is that he has to have her. For Charlotte’s part, she was drawn to this stranger and couldn’t deny her attraction to the man, but she didn’t want to act upon those feelings because she was hiding. When things come to light, Charlotte discovers Nick is there to take her back to Lord Radnor. They agree to marry each other with the understanding that this marriage isn’t a love match. But of course, we all know that as these two spend more time together, those feelings they try to deny become harder and harder to ignore. I liked Charlotte and Nick’s relationship and enjoyed watching as these two learn to live with one another and open up to each other. I especially loved watching Nick struggle with his feelings. He doesn’t want to admit how much Charlotte means to him. But when it finally hits him that he is head over heels in love with her, that man has no issue falling to his knees and proclaiming his love for her. Don’t mind me as I swoon a bit. There is plenty of spice in this book. Nick really puts all those skills he learned at the beginning of this book to good use. So if you want a more spicy historical romance read, this one’s for you.

Worth Any Price is a steamy romance that will keep you up to the wee hours of the morning.
